I’ve been a bit more quiet with Curiosa this year, but we do have a project in the works. In about a week’s time Filipe and I will travel to Malta for the first weekend of a two-part project with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. We will be meeting some amazing young musicians from the Maltese Youth Orchestra and doing a workshop training with them, teaching them how to write music collaboratively. We will also have a short session with older participants from the Maltese Active Ageing group. As we our building the project around Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, we will be diving into the memories and feelings of nostalgia of our older participants, and using what we collect as starting points to make a new piece of music.
In the second part, our Curiosa collaborator Bea M Barrio will travel to Malta to work with the older participants to create a series of films, which we will then combine with the music we create. The performance will be held the day after the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra performs their Mahler Sixth.
We are so looking forward to this collaboration as it offers a new take on Curiosa’s work, and allows us to make music and art with an entirely different, and lovely, group of people.
