YOLK – Songs from the Body

Wow it’s been a long long time in the making, but I am finally able to release a video teaser of some of my new compositions for voice and movement! The series is called Songs from the Body, and this is one of the pieces called Lullabies. A series of three movements, this song is based on the rocking movement of the body, shifting from foot to foot, and breaking the music up between 9 singers.

I was able to share this music as a culmination of my work with the Voices Collective, which I’ve been hosting at my house (and nowadays in various other spaces) for a few years now. For a day, a bunch of singer-composers gather for food, tea, improvisations, and testing out their compositions for voice. It’s a lab approach with really low stakes, and is an opportunity to experiment, and support each others’ creative processes.

For the performance, I gathered 11 people to rehearse very quickly through a few rehearsals over the course of a week, and we managed to put on this beautiful concert in Old Church. We made a name for ourselves, and voila! YOLK was born. I hope you enjoy. Let me know what you think!
