Other Lands Other Sounds 2019 Concludes!

Our third ever Other Lands Other Sounds has reached its conclusion! Each time, I meet such incredible people and we learn, grow, and create together. It’s intense, it’s unique, it’s beautiful. Of course, you can’t help compare with prior years – this year’s group was more performance-focused, with artists and musicians often creating work inherently linked together. Thank goodness this…

Works featured on Hipoglote

As part of the collective A R | R A , I often collaborate with Portuguese artists Nuno Veiga and Filipe Sousa. I’ve now performed with them twice in Lisbon, along with other great Portuguese improvisers like Américo Rodrigues. Recently, the Portuguese podcast Hipoglote made an entire episode about our music, drawing from collaborations between all of us, as well…

CREATE & CONNECT – a music and well-being retreat

After four years of slow but steady growth, we are finally launching a second programme! I’m proud to announce that for 2019 we will be holding a new retreat, Create & Connect –   an immersive one-week retreat combining mindfulness, movement, voice, and creative music-making, held in a stunning manor house on a working farm in rural Portugal.   Our…

The Embodied Voice Winter Workshop Series 2019

Hello you movers and sounders! I’m excited to announce that I’m finally picking back up with The Embodied Voice, full of new ideas and things I’m keen to share with you! I took the fall term off in order to focus on teaching Musicality to drama students at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and completing a 10 week…

Sirens, a piece created at OLOS 2018

This summer I worked as part of the tutor team on Other Lands Other Sounds 2018. While Filipe took the lead for the musicians, and Beatriz did the same for the visual artists, I floated in between, making sure that everything was going smoothly. I also stepped in sometimes to help individuals on a more personal level. Chloe was the…

Reflections on Belonging and the Power of Creative Thinking

About a year ago now, Peter Renshaw, the veritable father of creative learning in conservatories, asked me to write a testimonial for his new book. The ideas behind the piece have been stewing about in my head for quite a while, connecting my practice as a performer, a traveler who belongs no where, a young person struggling, struggling with stress…

AR : RISC : AR

Filipe Sousa, Nuno Veiga and I had such a beautiful gig in collaboration with Americo Rodrigues, a renowned vocal improviser and art-maker, this summer. Combining text with electronics, voice, and piano, there were many special moments. To be honest, as I don’t speak Portuguese (yet!), I didn’t know what Americo was saying, but I know he was often working with his own poetry. I love performing with these folks as it always brings out a different side of my voice. Have a listen and a watch below!

Other Lands Other Sounds 2018

The largest project that I have self-produced this year is definitely Other Lands Other Sounds 2018, the third workshop of my company, Curiosa. Our approach differed this summer, in that we decided to collaborate with photographer Beatriz M Barrio, to offer a cross-arts workshop. And it was incredible. So intense. So beautiful. So fun. I won’t write a lot about…

Debut in Lisbon!

I had the honor of performing with a wonderful group of improvisers in Lisbon this summer. Along with Americo Rodrigues (Portugal’s foremost vocal improviser and poet), Nuno Veiga (sound design), and Filipe Sousa (composer), we performed a 45 minute set of completely improvised music at a very hip bookstore downtown. I’ve played with each person before, but never in that…
