THAT! Ensemble

Scroll

THAT! Ensemble create improvised voice and movement performances that cross the genres of music, theatre, and dance. Using their bodies to compose a journey for audiences in sound and space, they find a place where movement and music are simultaneously expressed. Devised specifically in relation to space, architecture, and audience, THAT! Ensemble’s improvisations honour the individuality of each singer and each situation, leading to dynamic, relational performances full of humanity, humour, and honesty, described by audience members as “joyous, holistic, thorough”, and “instinctual, animal, free…” They have played at the TATE Exchange, the Barbican Exhibition Halls, The London Charterhouse, and more.

THAT! Ensemble is composed of four multi-disciplinary female artists, each who bring a diverse range of skills and interests to the group. Artistic Director, Kate Smith, a classically-trained singer, performer, and workshop leader, is creator of The Embodied Voice and founder of Curiosa, a cross-arts workshop and retreat company. Verónica Chacón, a versatile mezzo-soprano, voice-over artist and illustrator-designer, is co-creator of Sounds & Shapes Ltd and leader of V&J Ensemble. Bronwen Stephens, mezzo-soprano and director, is founder and CEO of Rogue Opera. Francine Dulong, a physical theatre performer, educator, and Applied Theatre artist, is co-founder of Bagel and Balloon collective, as well co founder and co-artistic director of participatory theatre company Blooming Ludus.

“Their performances will truly stick out in my memory as some of the best I’ve ever witnessed (one in particular possibly being THE best!)

– Matt, composer
